How much should the RRP be?

You are free to set the recommended retail price of your book to whatever you want, however we will give you a guide price based on our opinion of how much you should charge for your book.

Where are my books produced?

We manufacture your books in the UK.

Who owns the copyright for my book?

The copyright ownership belongs to you as soon as you write your words down.

What is legal deposit and how does it affect me?

Legal deposit is a legal requirement that affects books that are intended for public use. Most countries have some form of legal deposit. In the UK, any book published has to provide 6 copies to the official lending libraries and archives. The only exception to this is if your book is for private distribution.

How do I get paid from sales of my book on your website?

Any money you make from sales of your book from our website is held by First Time Publishers. It will be released to you once that figure is above £50.00 GBP or the equivalent in any of the currencies we are currently supporting. We pay our authors using the PayPal internet payment service. Using PayPal allows us to pay you instantly wherever you live without having to worry about cheques getting lost or stolen.

I don’t live in the UK, can I publish my book with you?

Absolutely. However, there are a few limitations. We can only accept payment and remunerate writers in Pound Sterling, US Dollars, Canadian Dollars, Euros and Yen. At the moment, We only accept English text.

Is there a maximum or minimum order?

There is no maximum order but you must order an initial minimum of 50 books, this covers our set up costs. You can order reprints of your book providing it remains unchanged in a minumum amount of 30.

How do I submit my manuscript?

We accept manuscripts via email or posted on CD or floppy disk. Ideally we need the document to be saved as a Microsoft Word (.doc). Although we may be able to accept other formats. Email us if you have a query on file formats.

How many pages will my manuscript be as a book?

To work out how long your manuscript will be as a printed book, you need to conduct a character count on the entire document. On average, you will have 2700 characters per page for a finished book. So divide the number of characters in your manuscript by the figure above and you’ll have a fairly accurate page count – give or take a few pages.

Can I publish a picture book?

Yes. Although we specialise in text-based novels, it is possible to include black and white images, photography or even colour pages into your book. All you need to do is to embed the images you want to use into your manuscript. You need to make sure that these images are at a resolution of at least 300dpi at the size that they are used in your book. Colour pages are more expensive than black and white, so it is worth considering if you really need to use colour. We also offer a scanning service at an additional cost.

Will I see a proof?

Yes, we will supply a soft proof of your book before it goes to print..
By 'soft proof' we mean a low resolution pdf copy of the print ready artwork file which will be send to you by email for your approval.

Can I design my own front cover?

Yes. You are free to design your own from cover, you just need to supply it at 300dpi resolution. The size of our generic cover is 136mm wide x 216mm high. If these specifications go over your head, we will be happy to go explain the process via email when you place your order.

I don't want to design a cover, can you design one for me?

Yes. We have a bespoke cover design service which costs £200. Alternatively you are free to supply a cover from other designers of your own choice.

We can supply ultra high quality books in print runs as small as 50 copies!

Days of the Garron
The Story of the Highland Pony

A. F. Fraser

The Days of the Garron is the story of the Highland Pony told by one whose professional involvement qualifies him to speak with authority about a noble animal – from it’s origins in a primitive ancestry to its development as a significant factor in the social and economic life of a people.

From a childhood view of the native stallion as “the ultimate in power, elegance and beauty,” the author was inspired to make a study of equine biology with particular reference to the Highland Pony and the ingredients which combined to produce an animal of lovable temperament and impressive endurance supremely capable of surviving in harmony with a harsh and often hostile environment.

Dr Fraser also examines the Pony’s use and impact in the military struggles which marked the course of Scottish history and, keenly aware of the commercial threats accompanying its diminished status in peace no less than in war, advances constructive proposals for its continued survival as a familiar feature of the Highland landscape.

The many illustrations portray the physical characteristics which made the animal so much prized in its natural environment as well as the varied roles it has been called upon to play from the earliest times.

The Poetry Collection

Edited by Martyn Churchouse and Deborah May

This anthology is published by a young publishing house, which was set up by an ex-student of the University of Gloucestershire… The editors have completed a difficult job. They have whittled the volume of submissions down to give a good-sized selection, which shows the variety of poetry being produced by these writers.

For many of them, this is their first foray into the world of publication; for a few, it is another publication added to a growing list of credits. For some, this anthology celebrates their graduation from the University, for others it celebrates the completion of another level; for most, it celebrates the fact that their work has moved on to another stage and is now in the public domain.

All of the contributors to this anthology, including those that received the dreaded rejection slip this time around, have learned by the experience, and they will learn a great deal from the feedback they receive on their work from readers and critics; and that is the beauty of the craft all poets are engaged in, there is always another level to complete, there is always something else to learn.

A Short Anthology of Short Stories Volume 2

Edited by Jules Frusher and Freya Helewise
Introduction by Manzu Islam

Jules Frusher and Freya Helewise have judiciously selected the stories and skilfully edited them to produce an exciting collection. Many different genres and writing styles are represented: from fantasy to gritty reality, from the traditional mode to story telling to daring experiments, from the economy of style to intense poetic exuberance. However, whatever the genre or the style is chosen, the stories engage the readers and they have something to say. I have enjoyed reading them. I am confident that other readers would do so as well. There are real talents among the group of writers represented in this anthology.

A Short Anthology of Short Stories

Edited by Sonja van Leeuwen and Caspar R. J. Chamberlain
Introduction by Tim Pears.

"I read through the stories in this anthology, anticipating common themes and threads. To my delight, I found none. Instead I was treated to a variety of voices, subjects, characters, settings. The only thing the following stories share is a personal and distinctive approach to subject and form. And perhaps one more thing: each piece is a complete story, in which the writer has managed to compress the idea they had into four or five pages -and this is no mean feat." - Tim Pears

Joseph Conrad’s Almayer’s Folly Adapted for the Stage

By Caspar R. J. Chamberlain

This is an adaptation of the Joseph Conrad novella into a stage play. It has been influenced by the comedy of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and the ridiculed character Malvolio. Conrad’s protagonist, Almayer, is of a similar nature and as the title suggests, he is prone to making mistakes. This text I feel has a lot of hidden comedy, lots of outlandish characters; it is set in one Borneo river community, Sambir, and therefore lends its self to a stage performance.
