Synopsis
The Days of the Garron is the story of the Highland Pony told by one whose professional involvement qualifies him to speak with authority about a noble animal - from it’s origins in a primitive ancestry to its development as a significant factor in the social and economic life of a people.
From a childhood view of the native stallion as “the ultimate in power, elegance and beauty,” the author was inspired to make a study of equine biology with particular reference to the Highland Pony and the ingredients which combined to produce an animal of lovable temperament and impressive endurance supremely capable of surviving in harmony with a harsh and often hostile environment.
Dr Fraser also examines the Pony’s use and impact in the military struggles which marked the course of Scottish history and, keenly aware of the commercial threats accompanying its diminished status in peace no less than in war, advances constructive proposals for its continued survival as a familiar feature of the Highland landscape.
The many illustrations portray the physical characteristics which made the animal so much prized in its natural environment as well as the varied roles it has been called upon to play from the earliest times.
